Historical background

Native grape from Friuli. Among the large group of Malvasia vines, the one cultivated in Friuli is the Istrian Malvasia, whose origins seem to come from the Peloponnese, an area famous for its wines and land of conquest of the ancient Venetian Republic. The Venetians are believed to have spread this vine first in Crete and then in Italy. In Istria, and in particular in the areas of Rovinj and Poreč, the first traces of cultivation of Malvasia date back to 1300. Since then, Malvasia vine has spread up to the Carso area near the cities of Trieste and Gorizia and in the valleys of Friuli.
Nowadays, it is cultivated all over the hilly area of Friuli and along the coast.
