Historical Background

Native grape from Friuli, undoubtedly very old, it was already cultivated during the Roman imperial period when it used to delight the palates of popes and emperors. Among the Picolit gourmets is to remember Carlo Goldoni, who defined this wine as "the most shining gem of Friuli”.
If the Picolit vine has come till our days, is thanks to the Count Fabio Asquini of Fagagna, who in 1700 saved it from sure death. It was also Asquini who made this wine famous among the "foreigners” of the high class markets such as London, Paris, Genoa, Milan and Ancona. Not only was Picolit so appreciated in Italy, but it also found connoisseurs at the Court of France, at the papal court and the King of Sardinia, as well as the Emperor of Austria and the Zar of Russia. In the 19th century, the production had a stop, but it restarted vigorously in the seventies of the 20th century. The Picolit is characterized by a limited production due to a peculiarity in the development of the grapes, which undergo a partial floral abortion, making the grape itself quite spread and producing smaller and sweeter grape berries. Nowadays it is cultivated in the hilly area of Friuli Venezia Giulia, in the provinces of Udine and Gorizia. The 2006 harvest was the first with the status D.O.C.G. (Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin) "Orientali Colli del Friuli – Picolit": thanks to such a valuable recognition, the Picolit is in fact the second wine with DOCG label in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region.
