Native Friulian grape variety that has been known since 1300, the name Ribolla comes from the Slovenian “Rebula", which in the local Friulian dialect became “ribuele". At the beginning of the past century, during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, sweet filtrates of Ribolla were very appreciated and popular. Ribolla owes its name to the characteristic high content of malic acid, which in the past was said to make the wine "boil" in the carboys.
This ancient grape variety is nowadays grown mainly in the hilly area that spreads from Tarcento, passing through the Carso region until Istria. Ribolla finds its best expression when produced in the hilly region, where this vigorous vine - characterized by late budding and maturation - gives excellent results.
