Cluster
Schioppettino

 colli-orientali

Rather large, cylindrical and elongated in shape with one or two wings clearly visible. Moderately compact. Long, and slightly woody peduncle. Berry almost elliptic in shape. Blue-black in colour, waxy and rather thick peel. Two or three small seeds, pear-shaped.

Wine

Full-bodied, not very alcoholic, with good, fixed acidity, fresh and citrine. Intense ruby red colour with violet notes, which tends to fade with aging.
Characteristic and intense scent of wild berries - wild blackberry, raspberry and blueberry - mixed with a spicy note evoking the scent of green pepper.
A complex and elegant wine, intense, with a spicy flavor and a perfect taste-smell match. Aged in wood it acquires a good structure and a complex aromatic note.

Historical Background

Native grape from Friuli, also known as Black Ribolla, probably originated in the area of Prepotto. The origin of the name is uncertain, though the onomatopoeic name may come from the fact that Schioppettino, due to its high acidity, after completing the fermentation in bottles becomes slightly fizzy, giving the impression (both to hearing and taste) to crackle because of the carbon dioxide it has developed. Someone also says that its name might come from the crackling that its berries produce while chewing, because of their tight and thick peel.
Currently, the grape is grown mainly in the Prepotto area in which a sub-area called "Schioppettino of Prepotto" has been officially recognized by decree in June 2008.
